Paintings and Posters by Hasui Kawase

Hasui Kawase was a Japanese artist and one of the most celebrated landscape artists of the 20th century. He is especially known for his atmospheric woodblock prints featuring Japanese temples, landscapes, weather, seasons, and lighting.

His art often captures quiet moments – falling snow, rain over a city, evening light at a shrine, or moonlight over water. This makes the motifs perfect for homes where you want to create a sense of calm, reflection, and Japanese aesthetics.

• Known for Japanese woodblock prints featuring temples, villages, bridges, and nature.

Shin-hanga roughly means “new prints” and was a Japanese art movement that developed in the early 20th century. The movement built on traditional ukiyo-e woodblock prints while incorporating more modern perspectives, lighting, and a more realistic style.

Hasui Kawase became one of the most significant artists of the shin-hanga movement. His work combines classic Japanese tradition with a more modern, atmospheric, and emotive visual language.

• Japanese woodblock art from the early 20th century.
• Builds on ukiyo-e with more modern lighting, perspective, and mood.
• Associated with landscapes, seasons, weather, and poetic settings.
• For those who want Japanese art with both a traditional and modern feel.

Hasui Kawase posters are characterized by tranquility, soft color transitions, and a strong sense of light and weather. The motifs are often serene yet highly expressive, with a distinct atmosphere that makes a room feel more harmonious.

The color palette often features muted blues, greens, grays, browns, and warm reds. This makes the motifs easy to pair with Scandinavian, Japanese, Japandi, and minimalist interiors.

• Muted colors with blue, green, gray, brown, and warm tones.
• Motifs featuring temples, bridges, snow, rain, twilight, and moonlight.
• Serene compositions full of atmosphere and depth.
• Japanese wall art that creates calm without feeling empty or cold.

Hasui Kawase's artwork often depicts Japanese landscapes, temples, shrines, villages, coastlines, and cityscapes in different seasons and weather. His art captures not only a place, but also a moment in time.

Some scenes have a wintry stillness, while others feature evening light, rain, mist, or warmer landscapes. Together, they create a rich visual world with a distinctly Japanese identity.

• Japanese temples, shrines, bridges, and traditional buildings.
• Snow scenes, winter landscapes, and tranquil city scenes.
• Rain, mist, evening light, and moonlight over water.
• Scenes from Tokyo, Kyoto, Hakone, Nikko, and Japan's coastlines.
• Landscapes featuring mountains, fishing villages, roads, and tranquil natural settings.

Hasui Kawase works beautifully in Japandi interiors because his artwork is rooted in simplicity, balance, nature, and stillness. It has a Japanese foundation, but the colors and compositions also work beautifully in Scandinavian homes.

The artwork adds cultural depth without feeling heavy. A Hasui poster can create a soft contrast against light walls, wood, linen, ceramics, and other natural materials.

• Suits Japandi, Scandinavian minimalism, and Japanese aesthetics.
• Creates a sense of calm alongside wood, linen, paper, ceramics, and bamboo.
• Adds depth and atmosphere to a room without taking over.
• Works both as a standalone poster and as part of a harmonious gallery wall.

Hasui Kawase posters are especially well suited to rooms where you want to create calm, contemplation, and quiet beauty. In the bedroom, his muted landscapes can create a meditative feel, while in the living room, they can become an elegant, atmospheric focal point.

In a home office, the artwork can help create focus without visual stress. It also works beautifully in reading nooks, entryways, meditation rooms, spas, Japanese restaurants, and rooms where you want to create a calm, thoughtful atmosphere.

• Bedrooms - with tranquil landscapes, snow, rain, and soft colors.
• Living rooms - as an elegant Japanese focal point above a sofa or sideboard.
• Home offices - for focus, balance, and visual calm.
• Entryways and reading nooks - for a clean, contemplative look.
• Spas, restaurants, tea rooms, and meditation rooms - for a Japanese atmosphere.

Hasui Kawase posters look best when the framing and room enhance the stillness of the artwork. Choose simple frames in dark walnut, black, birch, or light oak, and avoid overly decorative frames that compete with the artwork.

Leave plenty of space around the poster. Japanese aesthetics often focus on balance between the artwork and empty space, so Hasui's work really shines when the wall doesn't feel overcrowded.

• Choose dark walnut or a black frame for a classic Japanese feel.
• Choose light oak or birch for a softer Japandi feel.
• Pair it with linen, paper, ceramics, wood, and natural materials.
• Hang the artwork with plenty of space around it.
• Pair muted blues, greens, and browns with textiles and accents.

A gallery wall with Hasui Kawase posters will feel especially harmonious if you choose motifs in the same color palette or depicting the same season. Three winter motifs in shades of blue or three evening motifs in warm brown and red hues can create a very cohesive wall.

For a more personal look, you can combine Hasui with other Japanese artists, such as Hokusai, Hiroshige, or Ohara Koson, while keeping the colors and frames consistent for a cohesive look.

• Combine several Hasui motifs in the same color palette.
• Choose a season as your guiding theme - winter, rain, autumn, or evening light.
• Use the same frame style for a calm, cohesive look.
• Mix with other Japanese woodblock prints for an art-historical gallery wall.
• Make a larger landscape the focal point and complement it with smaller motifs.

Yes, Hasui Kawase posters work very well in modern homes. Although the motifs have a distinct historical and Japanese heritage, they still feel relevant thanks to their simplicity, balance, and atmospheric quality.

In modern and Scandinavian homes, a Hasui poster can provide a tranquil contrast to clean lines and light materials. In classic homes, the motifs enhance a more timeless and cultivated feel.

• Suits modern, Scandinavian, classic, and Japandi-inspired homes.
• Adds cultural depth without feeling cluttered.
• Pairs beautifully with natural materials and calming colors.
• Brings a Japanese feel to your home with tranquility, light, and balance.
